The Culture Lab Cooperative (May 17-19) is a weekend-long immersive exchange with a carefully-selected cohort of local and national curators, education specialists, administrators, and other museums practitioners. The CLC begins with intimate site visits led by New Orleans-based non-profit Shift, where participants will learn about the complex and evolving history of the city through the perspectives of artists, community organizers, and cultural practitioners. Through these conversations and design workshops, the retreat will cultivate tangible, applicable methods of community-centered museums practice. Participants will also get a behind-the-scenes look at how the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center’s philosophy behind Culture Labs has helped institute innovative, socially-engaged museum programs nationwide.
Some testimonies from other Shift-led events in New Orleans…
“I came away from the symposium with a renewed sense of purpose and confidence for the work we do.”
“I said it at the time, but I feel like you changed my life a little bit on the tour, and I 110% believe every museum professional should do the tour you gave us.”
“I loved how community stories permeated every aspect of the two days and how you made the city of New Orleans a central character in the meeting.”
“These type of gatherings rarely prove worth the time away from under-resourced work at our home organizations, however this was the exception due to the deliberative care SHIFT took in putting this event together.”
“Thank you to you and all your New Orleans friends/community builders/cultural torch bearers for their warm hospitality and unforgettable stories. The day flew by and I will carry the memory and spirit of it with me always.”
